Varzob

Varzob gorge (Taj. Varzob; - river in the south-west of Tajikistan, the right tributary of the Kafirnigan river. Length - 71 km, pool - 1740 km².

It originates on the slopes of the Hissar Range, formed by the confluence of the Ziddy and Maykhur rivers.
In the lower reaches, the average water flow is 45.9 m³ / s, max. 61.3 m³ / s, min. 31.5 m³ / s. Food - ice. High water from the end of February to the beginning of October, the maximum flow is observed in June. Mineralization 100-260 mg / l.
In the south, near Dushanbe, Varzob, merging with the shallow river Lyuchob, crosses the city, dividing it into two parts and is called "Dushanbe". Further, in the south, it flows into the Kafirnigan river.
During the spring and autumn rains, the river becomes especially stormy, transferring a large amount of clay and sand that fell as a result of mudflow into the waters of the Lyuchob, Ziddy, Maykhur and numerous streams.
The river’s waters are used to irrigate a few farms located along the river, and Varzob is the main waterway of the capital of Tajikistan - the city of Dushanbe, located in the south. In the north of the city, along Varzob, water treatment systems and the city central water supply station are located.
Also, along the river there is a cascade of hydroelectric power stations, the largest of which is Varzob HPP-1 (Verkhne-Varzobskaya).
Along the river, in the gorge of the same name, there are numerous recreation areas, at 40 km there is the summer Presidential Residence - Puguz. There are underground hot springs in the Varzob gorge, in the sanatorium of Khoja Obigarm.
12 kilometers from Dushanbe, Varzob Lake is located - an artificial reservoir created specifically for the recreation of citizens.
Small crustaceans are found in the waters of the river, as well as small fish - marinkas and gobies. Also in the waters of Varzob river trout is found.
The river’s waters are used as drinking water for the population of Dushanbe.
