The museum has a total area of 24 000 m2, of which over 15 000 m2 are exhibition halls. It is composed of four exhibition departments—Department of Natural History, Department of Ancient and Medieval History, Department of Modern and Contemporary History, and Department of Fine and Applied Arts. The National Museum of Tajikistan (Tajik. Osorkhonai Milli Tokikiston) is located in the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe. Until 2011, he was named after the famous Persian miniature painter Kamoliddin Bihzod, who worked in the courtyards of Hussein Baikar and Ismail I. In March 2013, he was transferred to the new building - the National Museum of Tajikistan.
On August 12, 1934, a joint decree was issued by the CEC and the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR on the formation of museums in Tajikistan. The People’s Commissariat of Tajikistan issued a decree establishing the K. Behzad Museum in Dushanbe. In 1959, the museum was transformed into a republican united museum of historical and local lore and fine arts. On November 27, 1999, by the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, the museum named after K. Behzad received national status.
In March 2013, the opening ceremony of the new building of the National Museum of Tajikistan took place in Dushanbe. The museum consists of 22 large and small exhibition halls. These are the exposition departments of nature, antiquity and the Middle Ages, modern and recent history, visual and applied arts. The museum has a research department, where the written heritage departments are located, and archeology and numismatics departments new in the museum activities of Tajikistan. An international department has been created to cooperate with foreign organizations. In addition, there is a stock department, an accounting department and a restoration department. The exposition area of the National Museum of Tajikistan is 15 thousand m². In 1934, the museum had a total of 530 exhibits. The new exposition of the National Museum of Tajikistan collected objects of material heritage, flora and fauna from all museums in the country. The number of exhibits exceeded 50,000
